A growing
movement in Canada is calling for Elon Musk to be stripped of
his Canadian citizenship, with more than 200,000 people signing
a parliamentary petition. The petition cites Musk’s close alliance with Donald
Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada as the 51st
state during his second U.S. presidency.
📜 The Petition’s Origins
- Launched by Qualia Reed: A British Columbia author
initiated the petition, which was sponsored by Charlie Angus,
a New Democrat MP and vocal critic of Musk.
- Accusations Against Musk: The petition, filed
on February 20, accuses Musk of “engaging in activities that
go against the national interest of Canada” by advising Trump, who has
openly challenged Canada’s sovereignty.
🛑 Why the Outcry?
- Trump’s Threats: Trump has repeatedly
mocked Canada’s independence, even suggesting imposing steep tariffs on
Canadian goods and annexing the country.
- Musk’s Role: As a key adviser to Trump,
Musk has been accused of supporting policies that undermine Canada’s
sovereignty. His public praise of Canadian Conservative leader Pierre
Poilievre and criticism of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have
further fueled the backlash.
🛂 Can Canada Revoke Musk’s Citizenship?
- Legal Grounds: Canadian law allows
citizenship to be revoked in cases of fraud, misrepresentation, or
withholding information on immigration applications. However, political
alignment with a foreign government is not typically grounds for
revocation.
- Public Sentiment: The petition reflects
widespread frustration among Canadians, with over 203,000
signatures and counting.
🗳️ What’s Next?
- Parliamentary Action: The petition will be
presented to Canada’s House of Commons when it resumes on March 24.
If it garners enough support, it could prompt a formal government
response.
- Election Implications: With a potential general
election on the horizon, the petition could become a flashpoint in
Canadian politics.
🌍 The Bigger Picture
This
petition highlights the growing tension between Canada and the U.S. under
Trump’s leadership, as well as the polarizing influence of figures like Elon
Musk. It also raises important questions about citizenship, national loyalty,
and the role of billionaires in global politics.
